May such voices be heeded in the future and not suppressed violently, when they are publicly advocating necessary rights. Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and many others like them were shot and killed. So many martyrs of the 20th century were just too good for this world. He demonstrated true nobility by pursuing a Christlike kingship, and I'm sure he is enjoying his status in the next life. Gandhi was born into a noble family and yet was able to calmly resist discrimination and disrespect. So the British were under a lot of pressure, both by Gandhi's nonviolent resistance and violent resistance by young Indians. Heroes like Bhagat Singh and his friends emerged at this time. Nonviolent resistance was a very important tool in the Indian fight for independence, but the transition wasn't entirely peaceful.Īlong with Gandhi's movement, there were also violent movements across India. I would like to however refute a common argument made about Gandhi's movement. He was a leader who helped his people recognize their situation and demand independence, but without causing harm to anyone. Mahatma Gandhi has been and will always be an excellent example for people who want to fight injustice. Mahatma Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was a leader for all Indians, regardless of caste or religion, and this had upset a lot of extremist Hindus who wanted to maintain the caste system or who were upset about other religious minorities.įebruary 14, I completely agree. February 15, I think he was assassinated by an extremist Hindu. The first is that Mezrich's primary source is Eduardo Saverin, so it is understandable that events are slanted toward his point-of-view (a fact brought out publicly by Mark Zuckerberg, who refused to cooperate with Mezrich). There are two notable things about the book, which is allegedly the distillation of countless interviews put into narrative form. The source material for The Social Network is Ben Mezrich's The Accidental Billionaires. You don't have to be a Facebook member (I am not) to enjoy what this movie is offering. The Social Network is rich with food for thought but the reason it captures the viewer's interest for more than two hours is because its story of friendship and betrayal is as old as traditional society and is presented with tremendous skill. The film, which is a joint product of respected director David Fincher and equally respected screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, accomplishes its multiple goals: create a gallery of fascinating, fully realized characters chronicle key events in the development and growth of today's most influential social networking site, Facebook and explore the blurred lines that exist in the amorphous on-line environment where concepts like intellectual property are involved. The Social Network shows that, when pet projects are at issue, nerds can get as nasty and dirty as the most skilled backstabbers and double-dealers. Website development as a blood sport - that's what it comes down to. I also had a bit of trouble with the fact that there were some things that popped up in this book that I don’t remember at all from CREWEL or UNALTERED. I felt like the characters had changed - which isn’t a bad thing at all - but I did miss the banter and sarcasm that I felt was much more prevalent in the first two books. I really wasn’t able to fall back into it and this book really lost the familiarity for me. I also do feel like a good book is still a good book and even though I took a long time to read UNRAVELED, that wasn’t the only issue. I ended up actually grabbing the audiobook for this to make some progress and finally finish out this series but I just couldn’t quite get into it. This was another series I just waited too long to finish and I totally lost steam with it. Ghostland is Parnell's moving exploration of what has haunted our writers and artists - and what is haunting him. Sebald's The Rings of Saturn and Graham Swift's Waterland to the archetypal 'folk horror' film The Wicker Man. He explores how these landscapes conjured and shaped a kaleidoscopic spectrum of literature and cinema, from the ghost stories and weird fiction of M. In Ghostland, Parnell goes in search of the 'sequestered places' of the British Isles, our lonely moors, our moss-covered cemeteries, our stark shores and our folkloric woodlands. For comfort, he turned to his bookshelves, back to the ghost stories that obsessed him as a boy, and to the writers through the ages who have attempted to confront what comes after death. However, the biggest change Kubrick made to The Shining came at the close of his adaptation. While Flanagan’s film makes an admirable stab at following up both Kubrick’s movie and King’s novel, the biggest issues that Doctor Sleep fails to fix come from the tonal disconnect between the duo's divergent visions for The Shining. However, audiences were less uncertain, with Doctor Sleep becoming a flop and the first major financial misstep of Flanagan’s career. This movie, from the cult horror helmer responsible for everything from Netflix hit The Haunting of Bly Manor to the earlier King adaptation Gerald’s Game, left critics divided over its attempts to follow up Kubrick’s film while also adapting King’s 2014 novel, Doctor Sleep. In 2019, Kubrick’s adaptation of The Shining received a belated sequel in the form of Mike Flanagan’s Doctor Sleep. Related: Stephen King’s IT Theory: Why The Remake's Pennywise Is A Worse Clown Kubrick’s adaptation altered King’s critically-acclaimed novel in numerous key areas, ranging from tone and pacing to the movie’s famously divisive ending. Stephen King, who authored the original novel of the same name that The Shining was based on, didn’t appreciate the fact Kubrick took huge liberties in adapting his story to the screen. However, one notable dissenter wasn’t as fond of The Shining as film critics or horror fans.
